Chapter 12

All eyes were on the bride, except Finn’s. Standing on the dune, he studied Mercedes. She couldn’t see him so he took his time. Those creamy shoulders above her sparkly top brought back gut-wrenching memories. He knew how it felt to graze that soft skin with his lips. And the short fluffy skirt? The breeze was playing havoc with the ruffles. He almost laughed out loud when Mercedes clamped down hard on the skirt with both hands. Her bouquet got in the way. Face pink as the sunset, she looked totally frustrated. Mercedes liked to control everything, even the wind.

Like most brides, Kate looked like she might cry as she walked toward Cole. But his daughter was having the time of her life, showering flower petals in front of Kate while the Great Dane tried to snap them up. Prissy was the real hero of the day, in Finn’s eyes. He’d have to get a picture of the prancing dog in that crazy pink boa. That shot would definitely have a spot at the Mangy Mutt.

When Kate reached Cole, the whispering stopped. Except for the seagulls, silence settled along the shoreline. Cole looped Kate’s arm through his. All the women grabbed for tissues but none of that sentimental stuff for Finn. He was a man with a mission, casually scanning the other guys. Which one looked good enough to be Mercedes’ boyfriend?

Finn had googled Stephan Forbes of New York City and his business page came up. He was good looking. Finn would give him that. But the guy had snake eyes and Finn didn’t trust him. And the way his business was described? A lot of corporate mumbo jumbo. Stephan was probably a jack of all trades, master of none. He wasn’t good enough for Mercedes, and Finn wasn’t about to cede the field.

The only man who looked like he might be Stephan Forbes was a tall blond wearing a sand-colored sport coat. But Stephan didn’t have light hair in the photos online.

Back to Mercedes. Beaming at the couple, the minister began the ceremony. Trying unsuccessfully to settle the illicit feelings holding his body hostage, Finn felt a little sleazy. How bad was it to lust after Mercedes in her tiny dress during a solemn service like this? But he was just that whipped. That night of Moonlight Madness had been amazing and crazy. Damn. He’d held his future in his arms and she felt more than right. Convincing Mercedes, however, was going to be a full time job.

Maybe it had been the moon. He liked to think it was fate. Whatever. He had no regrets. He’d been the man she turned to, not Stephan Forbes. That night had been his and as for the rest? Sure, he wanted her like he wanted his next breath. Made him restless just thinking about the things he had in mind. His Dockers shifted in the sand, and he dug in his heels while the minister came to the vows.

Problem was, Mercedes had to want it too.
